Gracen Pitre: The Eastern Eggplant
Immediate, but not unanimous consensus on was reached during the final 5 minutes of the environmental Conference. It seems that everyone, excluding Ontario, loves the Canadian Green Investment Bonds. On the subject of Green Bonds, the federal government summarized the proposed bill, and immediately sent it to vote! There was no debate, no outcry, or outlandish speeches. 12 out of 13 provinces and territories voted, and signed yes to the bill, Ontario being the outlier. The room erupted in applause, and the conference even retired 5 minutes early. "Mission Accomplished" Northwest Territories confirmed. The only objection heard, was a comment by Ontario- "I'm not signing anything."

In terms of fresh water, it is clear that indigenous reserves are in a crisis. Certain First Nation communities have had long term boil water advisories for years. There are 81 of these long term drinking water advisories which affect more than 50 indigenous communities. Teddy Brimblecombe, Gracen Pitre, and Alexander Roe: The Eastern Eggplant
On the topic of fresh water, everybody is on board to protect, preserve and work proactively. However, cooperation has been found difficult for some provinces. The conference meeting degraded into near chaos over the distribution of funds between provinces and territories. The sides: the federal government, and Quebec against everyone else. In their opening statements, Manitoba strongly opposed the Canada Carbon Union in their efforts to create a carbon tax. They are not the only province or territory who opposed the tax, however they were alone in not signing the agreement at the end of discussions. Nunavut for example; whose economy has been struggling with an already increased cost of living from imports, were willing to negotiate on the subject. Even Nova Scotia, who had initially objected, ended up signing onto the agreement. Gracen Pitre and Teddy Brimblecombe: The Eastern Eggplant
Today, the environmental talks revolved around one topic: the Federal Government's unilateral carbon tax. The proposed bill intends to impose equal taxes of increasing values until 2030 across all provinces and territories. However the provinces did not accept the federal plan with open arms. Through the years it would be natural to assume that Quebec is politically split down the middle. What comes unexpected is when Ontario presents a major internal conflict. Approximately 38% of Canada's population lives in Ontario, generally making them the trendsetter of the nation for laws and rights. This makes it all the more troubling to hear the internal conflict the province is having under Doug Ford’s government. Gracen Pitre: The Eastern Eggplant Leading up to FedProv, it’s important to know about our leaders’ positions on controversial issues that affect our lives. We as a nation entrust the people we elect to stand for our rights and beliefs, and to be a representation of our own priorities. Unfortunately, not everyone can live up to our hopes. From the passionately optimistic to Debbie downers to the wildly unprepared, here is who to look out for at FedProv 2018.
